How URL Shortener & Short Link Generator Works

The URL Shortener turns a long web address into a short link on the 1Khmer domain, in the form 1khmer.com/s/abc123. When someone opens the short link, they are sent straight on to the original page. Short links are easier to type, read aloud, fit into an SMS, and print on posters, menus, business cards and flyers. They also tidy up long addresses full of tracking codes, such as links to Google Drive files, Google Forms, online shop products or Facebook posts.

Each short link keeps a simple click counter, so you can see roughly how many times it has been opened, for example to compare which Telegram channel or printed flyer brought more visitors.

How to create a short link

  1. Paste the long address into Destination URL. If you leave out http:// or https://, the tool adds https:// for you.
  2. Optionally enter a Custom Alias / Slug, such as khmer-new-year-menu. It must be 3 to 25 characters long and use only letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, and nobody else may already be using it.
  3. Optionally add a Link Title / Note, such as "Telegram channel" or "Flyer – Toul Kork". This label helps you recognise the link in your history list.
  4. Click Shorten URL.
  5. Your link appears under Short Link Ready!. Use Copy Link to copy it, the external-link icon to test it, and scan the small QR preview with your phone to check it opens correctly.

How it works behind the scenes

  • Codes: if you do not choose an alias, the system generates a random six-character code of lowercase letters and numbers, checking that it is not already in use. A custom alias is converted to a lowercase, URL-friendly form, so spaces or underscores may be turned into hyphens.
  • Re-using links: if someone has already shortened exactly the same address without a custom alias, you receive that existing short link instead of a duplicate. Its click count then includes everyone who uses that link. If you want a counter that reflects only your own campaign, give your link a custom alias.
  • Redirect: visitors are sent on with an HTTP 302 (temporary) redirect, and each visit adds one to the click count and records the time of the latest click.
  • Your history: the last 20 links you created are listed under Your Recent Short Links. This list is stored in your own browser, not in an account, so it will not appear on another device or after you clear your browser data.

Reading the click counter

Click the refresh icon next to a link in your history to fetch its latest click count. Treat the number as a guide rather than an exact count of people: the same person opening the link twice counts twice, and automated systems such as link-preview bots in chat and social apps may open a link when it is shared. The counter does not tell you who clicked, where they were, or what device they used.

Good uses and tips

  • Print: short links with a readable alias, such as /s/shop-menu, are much easier to type from a poster than a long address. Pair them with a QR code for people who prefer to scan.
  • Compare channels: create a separate link with its own alias for each place you post, for example one for Facebook and one for Telegram, and compare their click counts.
  • Test before you share. Open the short link yourself and check it reaches the right page, especially before printing anything.
  • Choose aliases carefully. Avoid personal information in the alias, because anyone can see it.

Limitations

Short links cannot be edited after creation; if the destination changes, create a new link. Removing a link from your history only hides it in your browser; it does not delete or disable the short link itself. Short links are public: anyone who has the link can open it, so do not use them to hide private documents. Links used for spam, scams or malware may be removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short links are created without an expiry date. They keep redirecting unless they are removed, for example because they were reported for abuse.
Each custom alias can belong to only one link. Try a more specific version, such as adding your shop name or the year.
No, the destination is fixed once the link is created. Create a new short link with the new address instead.
The result card shows a small QR preview for quick testing. For a high-resolution, printable version, paste your short link into the 1Khmer QR Code Generator and choose the Extra Large size.
