How Maps & Geometry Viewer Works

The Maps & Geometry Viewer is an interactive spatial tool designed for Cambodia. It allows you to plot GPS coordinates, inspect boundary lines, and visualize spatial geometries directly on high-resolution Google Satellite, Hybrid, and OpenStreetMap basemaps. All surface areas and perimeters are automatically measured in real time.

1 Quick Start Guide

A Load or Paste Spatial Data

Select your format in the Data tab (GeoJSON, WKT, or CSV), paste your spatial text, or test with one-click presets like Angkor Wat or Royal Palace. Click Render on Map to fly directly to the geometry.

B Jump to Coordinates (Go to Lat/Lng)

Click Go to Lat/Lng on the map toolbar or status bar. Paste coordinates like 11.5564, 104.9282, Google Maps links, or DMS formats. Select a zoom level to fly smoothly and place an animated target pin.

C Draw Custom Boundaries

Click Draw Boundary to trace any shape vertex-by-vertex on satellite imagery. Click Finish (or press Enter) to generate the GeoJSON and calculate enclosed land metrics instantly.

D Review Metrics & Export

Open the Metrics tab to see surface area in square metres, ares (អា), and hectares (ហិកតា). Click Export .geojson to download GIS-ready files for QGIS, ArcGIS, or Google Earth.

2 Supported Spatial Formats

GeoJSON

Industry standard for web mapping. Supports FeatureCollection and Feature objects containing Polygons, Points, and LineStrings with custom properties.

WKT (Well-Known Text)

Text-based geometry representation used by PostGIS, QGIS, and spatial databases (e.g. POLYGON ((lng lat, ...)) or POINT (lng lat)).

CSV / Spreadsheets

Tabular coordinates with header rows. Automatically detects latitude, longitude, and name columns for bulk point visualization.

3 Cambodian Land & Area Units

All polygon areas are calculated using geodesic spherical trigonometry (WGS 84 ellipsoid), accounting for the Earth's curvature. Calculated square metres are automatically converted into standard Cambodian measurement units:

Unit Name Khmer Term Metric Equivalent
Square Metre (m²) ម៉ែត្រការ៉េ 1 m²
Are / Kong អា / កុង 100 m²
Hectare (ha) ហិកតា 10,000 m² (100 ares)
Square Kilometre (km²) គីឡូម៉ែត្រការ៉េ 1,000,000 m² (100 ha)
💡 Quick Calculation: A rectangular boundary measuring 20 metres wide by 50 metres long equals 1,000 m², which converts directly to 10 ares (កុង) or 0.1 hectares (ហិកតា).

4 Best Practices & Tips

Coordinate Order Standard

GeoJSON and WKT specifications expect [Longitude, Latitude] (X then Y), while GPS displays typically write Latitude first. The viewer automatically detects and formats coordinates accordingly.

High-Precision Tracing

When drawing boundaries manually, switch to Hybrid or Satellite view and zoom in to Level 17–18 for accurate placement along tree lines, fences, and roads.

Keyboard Shortcuts

While drawing, press Enter to finish and close the polygon, or Escape to cancel drawing.

Copy Coordinates in 1 Click

Move your cursor anywhere over the map canvas and click the bottom-left coordinate pill to copy the exact latitude and longitude to your clipboard.

100% Client-Side Privacy All spatial parsing, coordinate transformations, area measurements, and file downloads execute exclusively within your web browser. Your coordinates and spatial boundaries are never transmitted or stored on any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use Hybrid to view high-resolution satellite imagery overlaid with road and place labels, or Satellite for an unobstructed aerial view. Roadmap and OSM are ideal for street-level navigation.
Click "Go to Lat/Lng" on the toolbar or coordinate status bar. You can paste coordinates in standard decimal degrees (11.5564, 104.9282), Google Maps URL formats, or DMS format. The map will fly smoothly to the target and drop a marker pin.
Yes. Once a shape is drawn, its coordinates are formatted in the GeoJSON editor in the Data tab. You can tweak coordinates directly and click Render on Map, or clear and redraw.
Only geometries stored in the active Data editor are exported. When you finish drawing a polygon or line, it is loaded into the editor and can be exported as a .geojson file.
Area measurements apply to 2D polygons. Points and linear routes have no enclosed surface area, so only perimeter/length and coordinate metrics are displayed in the Metrics tab.
